View Full Version : Should I buy a new computer for Trading?
You see... I have this 2 year old set up, AMD dual core 4400, 4gb ram, rapter drive, alot of extras, but it seems to be getting slow, my charts sometimes crash and I can't even play games on it anymore  I haven't blown off steam with a cool game since Christmas!
What do you recommend?
depends how much you make trading in return... :D
yes...spoil yourself with a top of the line badboy and save your current one for games....or
reload windows and all your programs like I did...computer same as new...I clean it regularly using Cyberscrub to delete all the nonsense, use sandboxie so my hard drive isn't filled to the brim with gif's, and utilize all the cool functions on Firefox...computer is still work fast after these little things...
Besides - you could always use a new monitor in your setup - no?

my question is, if you have muliple monitors, you'll need multiple video cards, but at what point does it become too much for your system to handle?
i think you should just go for it, your box is outdated now :yo:
bought a dell xps 720 a few months bcak, working great :yo: helped my trading significantly
Capri, just started to lease a new Dell XPS630 customized for me, but, unfortunately, I have to wait until the 30th to receive it.
Damn Mike, that's the worst feeling knowing you got something really cool out there coming to you.
GREAT NEWS EVERYBODY! My dell is coming tomorrow, their preliminary ship date is for Bollux, went out yesterday, hooray!
nice to hear mike! let us know how it runs :)

I got a new comuter the other day as well, homebuilt beauty :)
You don't need a beast of a computer. Just good memory, and a good amount of it too...
Yes, I agree Jones.. MT4 takes up a lot of memory when you add more and more charts
I'm talking to you from an APPLE IIGS, and what beyatches :D :D :D

I have AMD and Intel, pretty much no difference. They both get slow after a few years.
Whatever you do, don't buy a Mac, pieces of garbage, truly, and overpriced...
AMD is not that bad, intel is just overpriced. Beats the hell out of a Mac though

I think so too.:p

omg, that brings back memories of beingin elementary school and learning to use a Apple IIgs, pieces of crap, they haven't gotten much better g4, g5, all crap :heh::
U can't trade on a Mac very well
I'd be lost on a Mac trying to trade. Where's the second mouse button? I'm still stuck on that sad fact.

a good way to do it is buying a new one with your forex earnings. you will feel great after that.
I feel great when I put my Forex earnings in my bank and watch them collect interest :D

Forex is my side-job hehe, and it is a great feeling knowing that my hobby gives me money and it is there, resting for when I need it hehe
Although I think it’s a great encourage buying sth with it, makes it feel real and you kind of materialize all that past work in front of the computer

Yeah I think this is the solution.. If you indeed have multiple Monitors then a lot of video cars is also needed to 'make it more faster with its work speed.

If your computer works well then you dont need to buy for another set..
The memory is more important that's one good thing you have to consider..
My next machine will have the absolute best in graphics cards with the most graphics memory possible. Having 20+ charts open at any given time tests your machines physical and graphics memory.
My computer is on its way out. Too much surfing on shady sites installing things without my knowledge. That's why I plan to have a desktop dedicated to trading charts and a laptop to do all the surfing and trade entering, etc. etc.
an ugrade is all you need so you could pump it up!!

hi!
cool stuffs like that would surely help a lot. but it's not necessary, you just have to have a good memory anyway.
yes lots of memory is important
My trade machine started to slow down alot, but I added 2gb more memory to it and now its doing alot better :2cents:

I just use Norton Ghost to back up my drive once every other day so just in case disaster strikes, spyware, virus, malware, crash, dead drive, I can click a button and my drive is back to where it was a few days back. Try it, its really great.
Sure, treat yourself to a new PC, if it makes your charts move faster, then good for you!
im still using my old intel dual core, i remember when that was like OOOHhhhhh the greatest thing.
Now i hear about 64-processors on one chip!

my computer is slow as bawls right now, need a new one asafp
sorry, wrong spot
Yea i would say so too
Computers are so darn cheap these days
I just bought myself a $500 machine at Cosco, it sucks after one month already!
just replaced my old compaq dual core with Dell i5....great new machine
Would you say the best trading computers deal more with the more ram you have as you open more and more charts? CPU really doesn't matter unless its ancient.

Personally, I would build my own box and partition the hard drive for two OSs (probably Win7 and Ubuntu), that way if Windows crashes I'll still have access to vital data. You could also use an external hard drive for this utility though.
Another thing you could do is make sure your firewall, anti-virus and malware removal tool are up to date and functioning, with these tools in place most of the time a computer will last you two-three years.

So whats better, AMD or INTEL?
forexninja

Go ahead. Invest in one. It's your stallion; your tool; your best friend. The charts move faster, you can execute trades faster and you will certainly like the feeling of "new". Indulge, buddy!
Forex Ninja has a good point, it will make you far much more in the long run. Just sucks when you start out having nothing almost in this industry.
Maybe Forex itself isn't for public consumption.
I use a 5 year old computer, works fine

Depends on what kind of software you pplan on running, most charting programs are CPU light but Memory intensive

probably something like 2gb, 4gb ddr3 ram, no less than triple processor 2.3ghz, and decent graphics card if you're doing more than 1 monitor. when all the charts are up, it'll eat your GPU and RAM
processor will be more for calculations and tasks , so you can have multiple programs open at the same time, etc.
Perfect, why would you need anything more than a dual core to trade? You don't need the computer of death to run some simple programs, what you described is like a low-end gaming machine. lol
perfectuser
08-04-2011, 11:28
well, dual core are on their way out, but if you dont plan on playing a single game, then you can get away with a dual core duo 2 that is 3.0ghz, anything less is just not smart imo. really, the processor will allow for faster calculations, this could mean mere seconds compared to a minute , and could translate into losing $$$$

I use a Matrox Dual2Go.
You can add 2 independent monitors to a laptop, cost about 100 quid.
In all honesty, i only use it when i've taken a lady out for dinner, leave the computer on, 3 screens of charts usually impresses the hell out of em
shallow i know, i'm embarrased to be me at this point

Well played, sir. Well played indeed. The ladies love the dual monitors. I hope you get a good return on that investment :)

I just bought the new laptop some time ago (about two months) and I still don't like trading on it. The laptop is fine, but internet connection is too slow... I'm thinking about the router in my flat so I can use WiFi, but that will be probably even worse...
obviously it can be a slippery slope buying new equipment but i just dont understand the mindset of krappy ttrading computers. I also want to puke when i read the words 'my laptop. Laptop=only trade EURUSD. Laptop=destined 2 FAIL.
People spend 4000chf on custom wheels for theyre range Rovers but wont spend more than 900 on their tools. over 2.5 years its only about 400 a year.

I seems that your computer is infected by viruses,,
You do not need to buy new one, dual core is very enough for trade in forex. You should Instal fresh windows..
Perhaps, you just bought something that make your internet connection more fast...

I think that using router for wifi is not the main cause of slow internet connection. the main cause is from your providers...
Let's bought for best providers in your country..
