U.S. Retail Sales fell 1.3 percent during first three weeks in November versus October, according to Redbook Research's latest indicator of national retail sales. The drop in the index was compared to a targeted 0.7 percentage drop. The Johnson Redbook Index also showed seasonally adjusted sales in the period fell 1.1 percent compared with November 2007, relative to a target of a 0.5 percentage drop. Redbook indicated that on an unadjusted basis, sales in the week ended November 22 were down 1.4 percent from the same week in 2007. Performance was mainly attributable to weak results turned in by those stores that are on calendars comparing the week to last year's Thanksgiving week, Redbook said. "Mismatches like these are expected to result in a weak November," added Redbook, "and have led retailers to recommend combining November and December sales in terms of evaluating the holiday season." Shoppers held off shopping and waited for the upcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday deep promotions, Redbook said.

This sounds great, but the businesses that have to pay more to their employees will just increase their prices, passing this huge debit onto the consumer. You thought a big mac cost alot now?
All this will accomplish is the increase of unemployment among workers who are already disadvantaged.

Federal Reserve
Stocks fell today as the federal reserve met for their two day Open Market Committee meeting on interest rates. (read more at Millennium-Traders.Com) (http://www.millennium-traders.com/news/marketcommentaryaugust1109.aspx)
Economic data released today:
Redbook:
U.S. Retail Sales First Week of August fell 0.5% versus July; U.S. Retail Sales for First Week August fell 4.2% versus August a year-ago; U.S. Retail Sales fell 4.2% week end August 8 versus a year ago.
According to Redbook Research, national chain store sales fell 0.5% in first week of August versus previous month. The latest numbers are sharply different from recent weeks because they do not include Wal-Mart Stores (WMT), which indicated last month it would no longer provide monthly sales figures. The drop in the index was compared to a targeted 0.6% drop. The Redbook Index additionally showed seasonally adjusted sales for the period which were down 4.2% compared to August 2008, compared to a targeted 4.3% drop. On an unadjusted basis, sales for the week ending Saturday were down 4.2% from the same week in 2008, after a 5.4% decline the previous week. Per the data, it appears that shoppers were focused on clearance sales and were beginning to look at new back-to-school merchandise. Most stores are currently in transition between summer clearance and back-to-school sales. The summer clearances are being priced less aggressively than usual because of leaner inventories.
Non-farm Productivity:
U.S. 2Q Non-Farm Productivity Revised to increase by 6.4% compared to consensus of an increase by 5.5%.
Unit Labor Costs:
U.S. 2Q Unit Labor Costs Revised to fall by 5.8% compared to consensus of a decrease by 2.9%.
Wholesale Inventories:
U.S. June Wholesale Inventories down 1.7% expected to be down 0.9%; June Wholesale Inventory-To-Sales Ratio falls to 1.26.

Aug. 25 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve must for the first time identify the companies in its emergency lending programs after losing a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.
Manhattan Chief U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ruled against the central bank yesterday, rejecting the argument that loan records aren’t covered by the law because their disclosure would harm borrowers’ competitive positions.

It appears that currency traders are twisting the Fed's words out of shape having fully digested the latest policy statement and creating a sudden reversal in demand for dollars. The FOMC didn't really tell the market anything new and although they haven't necessarily caved in to pressure building since thehttp://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ActionForexall/~4/uqCAHOT61MM

Click Here To Read The Article "Fed Surprises Markets with Scope of QE2" (http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/forexforumsfeed/~3/gchgLKdu6ek/fed-surprises-markets-with-scope-of-qe2.html)
For the last few months, and especially over the last few weeks, the financial markets have been obsessed with the rumored expansion of the Fed’s Quantitative Easing program (”QE2?). With the prospect of another $1 Trillion in newly minted money hitting the markets, investors presumptively piled into stocks, commodities, and other high-risk assets, and simultaneously sold the US Dollar in favor of higher-yielding alternatives.
http://www.forexblog.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Fed-Balance-Sheet-2010-QE2.png
On Wednesday (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/04/business/economy/04fomc.html), rumor became reality, as the Fed announced that it would expand its balance sheet by $600 Billion through purchases of long-dated Treasury securities over the next six months. While the announcement (and the accompanying holding of the Federal Funds Rate at 0%) were certainly expected, markets were slightly taken aback by its scope.
Due to conflicting testimony by members of the Fed’s Board of Governors, investors had scaled back their expectations of QE2 to perhaps $300-500 Billion. To be sure, a handful of bulls forecast as much as $1-1.5 Trillion in new money would be printed. The majority of analysts, however, New York Fed chief William Dudley’s words at face value when he warned, “I would put very little weight on what is priced into the market (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBIQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Foneclick.indiatimes.com%2Fquote%2 F08K40Jc3l64jX&ei=P6fSTMq1BYHIuAOm95n0Dg&usg=AFQjCNFIqKj-Qp0hD-Z_9Vijt8K18sUNwQ&sig2=f2j4oqtRM39UZDNn1RKfVw).” It was also rumored that the US Treasury Department was working behind the scenes to limit the size of QE2. Thus, when the news broke, traders instantly sent the Dollar down against the Euro, back below the $1.40 mark.

On the one hand, the (currency) markets can take a step back and focus instead on other issues. For example, yields on Eurozone debt have been rising recently due to continued concerns about the possibility of default, but this is not at all reflected in forex markets. During the frenzy surrounding QE2, the forex markets also completely neglected comparative growth fundamentals, which if priced into currencies, would seem to favor a rally in the Dollar.
On the other hand, I have a feeling that investors will continue to dwell on QE2. While the consensus among analysts is that it will have little impact on the economy, they must nonetheless await confirmation/negation of this belief over the next 6-12 months. In addition, all of the speculation to date over the size of QE2 has been just that – speculation. Going forward, speculators must also take reality into account, depending on how that $600 Billion is invested and the consequent impact on US inflation. If a significant proportion of is simply pumped into domestic and emerging market stocks, then the markets will have been proved right, and the Dollar will probably fall further. If, instead, a large portion of the funds are lent and invested domestically, and end up buoying consumption, then some speculators will be forced to cover their bets, and the Dollar could rally.
Unfortunately, while QE2 is largely seen as a win-win for US stocks (either it stimulates the economy and stocks rally, or it fails to stimulate the economy but some of the funds are used to foment a stock market rally anyway), the same cannot be said for the US Dollar. If QE2 is successful, then hawks will start moaning about inflation and use it as an excuse to sell the Dollar. If QE2 fails, well, then the US economy could become mired in an interminable recession, and bears will sell the Dollar in favor of emerging market currencies.

Federal Reserve December 14, 2010 meeting minutes released on Tuesday (January 4, 2011), showed that Fed policy makers believed that the U.S. economic recovery still need support of monetary policy.
Despite the U.S. economic outlook is bright. The Federal Reserve would not change its plan to buy 600 billion U.S. dollars in treasury bonds.
In addition, the Federal Reserve said the U.S. dollar was stronger than previously expected; U.S. Federal Reserve agreed to extend the exchange program.
